High Plains state wrestling day 1

A great start to the NSAA state wrestling championships turned the other direction by the end of the evening for High Plains.  The Storm went a perfect 4-for-4 in the opening round of the tournament, but only one would  win their quarterfinal matchup.

Aurora put three wrestlers into Friday night's semifinal round after Thursday's opening rounds of the Class B NSAA state wrestling championships.  Brekyn Papineau, Mack Owens and Aaron Jividen all earned medal positions with their efforts Thursday, each winning a pair of matchups.

Huskies sport seven champs at conference

Aurora's wrestling team pushed 10 wrestlers through the finals in both the boys and girls brackets.  Seven of those won gold.  The Husky boys finished runner-up while the girls team finished third at Saturday's Central Conference meet held at Columbus Lakeview.

For the second time in as many duals, Jack Allen was in the finale spot and stole the show.  The Aurora junior scrambled for a third period pinfall victory as part of Aurora's dual matchup at Columbus Lakeview Thursday, an event the Vikings won 40-34.

Lady Huskies compete at first girls event

For the first time in school history, a crop of Aurora girls wrestlers competed at Columbus Lakeview Friday, starting a new tradition at AHS.  The Lady Huskies finished second in the team race behind the host Lakeview Vikings in a five-team tournament.

Aurora's two biggest plays on the football field Friday night came from first-year players who normally take to the basketball floor.  The Huskies rallied from 10 down to defeat Omaha Skutt 21-17 Friday night in the Class B semifinals, making its second consecutive state finals appearance.

Carlos Collazo may not be human.  The Aurora junior ran through and past Scottsbluff's defense, tying Aurora's single-game school record for rushing yards with 285 on 29 carries and four touchdowns as Aurora defeated Scottsbluff, 34-14 Friday night in the Class B quarterfinals.

GINW edges Aurora in B-6 final

The atmosphere was electric and the play on the court matched the intensity.  Aurora had the advantage first, but Grand Island Northwest had the last laugh, defeating the Lady Huskies in four, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-21 in the B-6 district final from GINW Saturday morning.
