A first half defensive shutout and a running game in overdrive proved to be the difference in this year’s budding Aurora/Central City rivalry, as the Huskies held on to an early lead to win the regular season finale, 41-27.That was the margin after a low-scoring first half, with Aurora up 14-0.

Storm defeat Knights in four

High Plains extended its season Monday night despite a slow start offensively.The Storm rallied after a first set loss to Nebraska Lutheran to defeat the Knights in four, 19-25, 25-11, 25-16 and 25-13 in the D2-4 subdistrict semifinals played at Meridian.

For the second time this season, all four area teams won out on the football field.Despite wild wind conditions, Hampton held on late to defeat St. Edward 48-40, moving its record to 6-1 on Homecoming night. Jack Bullis scored four rushing touchdowns in the game while throwing for a fifth.

Hampton coach Jereme Jones was a bit surprised following Hampton’s 77-20 win at Heartland Lutheran Thursday night. Jones’ pleasant revelation was just how efficient and buttoned up the Hawks played, given Hampton’s 27-day hiatus between contests. “That was a great performance,” Jones began.

Reagan Ashby’s defense was a problem for Hastings Thursday night. The Aurora junior set a new school single-match record with 50 digs as the Huskies picked up a four-set win over the Tigers in its regular season home finale, 16-25, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-23. Ashby was scoring 12.

Hampton, Henderson youth merge to form H&H cooperative, win league football title

Hampton and Henderson youth combined efforts and took the field for the first time as a cooperative program in the Farmer’s Valley Youth Football League this fall, capping what coaches said was a positive experience for all by winning the 8-man league championship.
