Huskies race to 2nd at conference

The Huskies brought the dogfight to Crete Thursday, coming home as runner-up finishers at the Central Conference race behind one of Class B’s finest.Aurora scored 27 points, just five points behind Lexington, who won the team title with 22. Seward was a distant third with 59 points.
Gage Friesen had another huge night on the ground for HPC in a 47-20 win over Lawrence-Nelson Friday, including 196 yards on 18 carries with three TDs. Friesen added 20 tackles defensively and a pick six.

High Plains coach Greg Wood shouldered the blame on what was a difficult quarter and a half of football. According to Wood, the Storm got too far away from “what we do best.” Once HPC got back to Storm football, the floodgates opened.

It wasn’t always pretty, but when it mattered most, Aurora’s hitters came through.After giving up a late lead in set one, the Aurora volleyball team took the next three in a four-set win at Hastings Thursday, 23-15, 25-15, 25-23 and 26-24.

The High Plains football team fell behind early, but left no doubt in the end.Powered by three Gage Friesen rushing touchdowns as well as a pick six, the Storm turned a 14-3 deficit into a 47-20 win at home Friday night.The win moves HPC to a 5-2 record with one game left in the regular season.

Aurora spotted Adams Central a first-quarter touchdown Friday before exploding for 21 second quarter points to earn a key 21-7 district win at home.The Huskies were slow out of the gate but recovered well in what coach Kyle Peterson said was a solid performance in a must-win game.

Aurora made it two in a row Friday night, going 1-0 in the district at the same time.The Huskies put out a stout defensive effort, holding Adams Central scoreless in the second half of a 21-7 win at home Friday.

The Aurora Huskies flipped the script and dropped the hammer after Friday’s first half, overcoming a 28-0 deficit with a dramatic 36-35 comeback win decided in the final seconds on a two-point conversion.

Vikings down Huskies in four

Much like the week before, Aurora’s volleyball team found itself in a wild, back and forth home contest with a rival.Unfortunately for the Huskies, the end result was the same, too, as the visiting Grand Island Northwest Vikings pulled out a four-set win, 17-25, 26-24, 26-24 and 25-15 Sept. 24.
