Think big, shop small

In the midst of America’s holiday shopping season a relatively new promotion is gaining steam which makes both dollars and sense, especially for rural communities. Shop small! It’s a pretty simple concept with huge implications, especially in the midst of a global pandemic.

This is one time I needed to be negative

“You tested positive for COVID-19.” Those are words nobody wants to here in 2020. Unfortunately, this global pandemic found its way to Hamilton County early on, impacting many people’s lives directly and disrupting countless others in various ways, including my own.

Holiday shines early in light of COVID angst

Don’t ever say, “Not in our household!” For over 60 years I stood firm on no Christmas decorations or Christmas lights will be displayed in our home until after the Thanksgiving Day celebration has been concluded. The past few years the Betterhalf has been fudging a little bit.

’Tis the season for giving in America and we’re reminded yet again what a difference we can make in the lives of people in need. We are truly blessed here in Hamilton County, though you don’t have to look hard to find people who for whatever reason are struggling this time of year.

Allen, Huskers tough out victory in home opener

Was it celebration or relief? Why couldn’t it be both? It was definitely both.  After the sweetest formation in football, Nebraska tight end Austin Allen turned around to see Luke McCaffrey, fresh off his first career collegiate start, and hugged it out.

Leafless trees grow more attractive with (our) age

“Driven . . . like leaves before an autumn wind.” That statement by writer/poet Robert Southey was made sometime between 1813-1843. Unfortunately, at the time of my reading a couple centuries later, it didn’t carry the romanticism the Englishman had wished to convey a couple of centuries earlier.

Crisis hits home

A global pandemic that has disrupted lives and livelihoods in 2020 is nearing crisis levels right here at home. By now, chances are that you, someone in your family, someone you work with or consider a close friend has tested positive for COVID-19.
