Where Jack Allen goes, people follow. He never takes anything too seriously, cracking a joke or breaking up the tenseness of a moment. Yet, when it’s time to buckle the chin strap or meet at the center circle, the smile leaves Allen’s face and is replaced with a fierce, determined look.

Hailey Lindburg was a two-sport star for High Plains, playing volleyball and basketball to be named the ANR female athlete of the year.

Hailey Lindburg did not play basketball her eighth grade year and had no intentions of playing in high school, either. With a ton of coaxing and promises made from High Plains girls basketball coach Mack Alspaugh, an introverted Lindburg gave the winter sport a shot -- and the game loved her back.

Carsen Staehr was a three-sport athlete for Aurora, competing in football, basketball and track for the Huskies, earning a share of the ANR male athlete of the year honors.

Carsen Staehr, no matter the sport, carried a quiet confidence about himself or his team. It wasn’t cockiness, it was more so a belief that no matter the circumstance, with all the chips on the table, Staehr would win out. He did. A lot.

Jace Dorsey batted twice in the fifth inning against Twin River, the second of those coming with a sweet after taste.Dorsey capped a five-run fifth inning for the Aurora Cooperative Juniors, hitting a walk-off single to defeat Twin River 12-11.

Aurora Cooperative Juniors battle in several close matchups

The Aurora Cooperative Juniors found the win column over Crete Thursday night in a week of super close opportunities. Aurora lost late-inning games to St. Paul and York before an 11-8 win over Crete Thursday. Two more close losses to York and SOS followed in York’s tournament over the weekend.

Jack Spiehs threw well against Central City, tossing five complete innings with just one earned run on the card.

Juniors start season at 1-1

The first two games for the Aurora Cooperative Post 42 Juniors team were on opposite ends of the spectrum. Aurora kicked off the season on a huge note, winning a 7-0 game on the road at Kearney May 22.
