NU seeks Allen’s perspective in search for new athletic director
Aurora native speaks out on behalf of student-athletes
Native son Austin Allen said he was both humbled and honored when asked to step outside his role as a Nebraska football player to join an elite group of Husker legends and university leaders charged with selecting a new athletic director.
Once the very secretive process was complete, Allen shared the message he voiced on behalf of all current NU student-athletes, as well as his perspective on the man hired for the job — Trev Alberts.
“I have to say it was a little intimidating at first because you’re sitting in a room with some of the highest people in the state and some of the most respected athletes that have come through here,” Allen said in a phone interview from Lincoln the day Alberts was introduced as the new AD. “I mean, you’re sitting there with Eric Crouch, Ndamukong Suh is on a Zoom call and Darin Erstad is sitting across the table. I felt like I was in a room with very powerful people, and I really was, and at the beginning that made it a little hard to speak up.”
Much like he has after Husker football games on behalf of his teammates, Allen found his voice, sharing a perspective he realized everyone in the room wanted to hear.
