Allen released from New York Giants practice squad

It’s a phone call no professional athlete wants to receive, which leads to a meeting with upper management. “Bring your playbook, too.” Former Husky Austin Allen got that call Oct. 18 when he found out he was being cut from the New York Giants’ practice squad.

Austin Allen beginning NFL career in New York

It was a phone call Austin Allen will never forget, one he waited several days for which left him with a chip on the shoulder.  Seven rounds had come and gone over a three-day period in the 2022 NFL draft and the former Aurora Husky’s name was never called as one of the 262 selections.

Oz’s last stand

Austin Allen’s first game in Memorial Stadium was a tough pill to swallow. His final one wasn’t any easier.  Oz, a then-junior for the Aurora Huskies, made one of the more impressive high school catches I’ve seen on the right sideline with his team down 25-21 on a 4th and 16.

Oz’s record showing

Everything finally started to fall into place for Austin Allen in Badgerland.  Well, except for one thing.  The Nebraska co-captain had the game of his life Saturday, catching seven passes for 143 yards in Saturday’s road game at Wisconsin, a single game school record for a tight end.

Tough decisions inching closer for Austin Allen

Native son Austin Allen has a huge decision to ponder over Nebraska’s second bye week, one that he doesn’t take lightly.  Will the final two games against Wisconsin and Iowa be his last as a Husker? Is there a path for Oz into the NFL?

Saturday night magic -- winning fixes everything

My mind raced faster than the Memorial Stadium light show ahead of the fourth quarter.  While Saturday’s 56-7 drubbing of the defending Big Ten West champs Northwestern evoked shock, awe, pride and celebration, I wondered: Is this what it was like to watch Nebraska in the 90s?

Capitalizing on opportunity

It’s safe to say freshman tight end Nate Boerkircher will never forget his first catch as a Nebraska Cornhusker. There’s just no way that’s ever going to happen.

Allen voted by teammates as Husker team captain

Captain Oz sure has a nice ring to it.  Austin Allen made it no secret since spring ball that his goal was to become a captain for the Nebraska football team.  A young man who has so many Nebraska youth looking up to him, both literally and figuratively, proved achieving your goals is possible.
