Heavy rains and a stiff field of competition gave Aurora senior Luke Grosshans everything he could handle last week at Monument Shadows Golf Course in Gering, though a day after carding his final round as a Husky he was putting it all in perspective.
High Plains junior Brodey Spurling was the area’s lone gold medal winner during last week’s state track and field championships at Burke Stadium, setting a new Storm school record in the triple jump with a mark of 44-6.5. He also finished third in the long jump and ran on HPC’s sixth place 400 relay team.

A healthy Brodey Spurling is dangerous and everyone watching Friday’s Class D triple jump found out the hard way.  The HPC junior hit a new personal record by well over two feet, set a new school record and won the gold medal, hitting a mark of 44-6.5 and clearing the field by just over a foot.

Roe Patton was in position to stake claim to a second pole vault championship. Unlike a perfectly written ending, Patton’s hopes were gone with the wind.

Kaitlyn Staehr’s first official jump at Burke Stadium was one to remember.The Aurora freshman threw down the gauntlet early with a 36-9.75 to take an early lead in the final flight of the Class B triple jump Thursday. Entering finals, Staehr sat in the second position.

The Class B pole vault Thursday afternoon will be an event to watch inside the Burke Stadium track.Aurora’s Roe Patton enters this week’s state track and field championships with as good of a chance as anyone else to claim a state title in the event, which features plenty of stiff competition.

The High Plains track team found success all season long in its relay events and those will be well-represented this week in Omaha.The Storm qualified two of its three boys relay teams, including a new school record during May 14’s D-2 district meet in Osceola.
