Breaking up is hard

Sigh. This is hard.  Scott Frost was hired as Nebraska’s new head football coach on a sunny Saturday in December of 2017. It was a dream hire, one nearly every Nebraska fan, media member and booster put full support behind.  My excitement was palpable.

A special moment for the Boerkirchers

I had this nagging feeling watching the Nebraska game on Saturday that I was in the wrong place.  With too much going on around here, I decided against going to the game as a media member and instead watched from home.

Aurora impresses in own 7-on-7 tourney

At this point in the calendar year, this sports guy can smell the football being tossed around from miles away.  No, it’s not an itchy rash. It’s a love for the game.

Second annual alumni game a blast from the past

Dick Phillips, an Aurora City Council member, made his way out to the mound and tossed a clean fastball to the plate in front of a cheerful crowd at Mitchell Field.  Wait, what? No, this isn’t a throwback article.

Winning moments

Some people call it ice water in the veins. Others refer to it as coming up in the clutch. There aren’t two other athletes in the coverage area that define those statements or live out those phrases better than Gage Griffith and Eva Fahrnbruch.
A special moment for two Aurora alumni followed Saturday’s Shrine Bowl game as Tom Kropp, one of the most decorated Nebraska high school athletes in state history took time to meet with Gage Griffith, the man who took down Kropp’s Aurora discus school record earlier this spring.

Pair of Husky legends share unique postgame handshake

Tom Kropp is a recognizable figure across the state for his legendary accomplishments that started in an Aurora uniform 50 years ago.  Just the mention of the name Kropp brings stories of game-winners, no hitters and the impossible becoming possible.

Never, ever leave early

I’ve always taken issue with people who leave sporting events early.  If you’re going to leave a baseball game during the seventh inning stretch or a football game after the third quarter, why did you even bother showing up in the first place? I should really practice what I preach.

Nothing Mini about Griffy

My job is relatively easy – be in the right place at the right time.  I was anything but Monday.  Gage Griffith became Aurora’s most prolific thrower Monday at the Central Nebraska Track Championships, besting school records in the discus and shot put.

Former area athletes work out for NFL teams

It’s a practice facility Austin Allen has become quite familiar with. Corey Hoelck, on the other hand, not so much.  Yet, for a short time March 22, the former Hamilton County standout athletes were shoulder to shoulder, showing off for NFL scouts at the Hawks Championship Center.
