Frost warning

There was a Frost warning a week ago in Nebraska, as in Husker A.D. Trev Alberts giving football coach Scott Frost one more season to get things back on the winning track.
The way I look at it, it’s going to take a whole lot of luck, something sorely lacking in Lincoln ever since the infamous Akron game was rained out four seasons ago in what was going to be our new coach’s exciting debut.
Doesn’t it seem like dark clouds have hung over this program ever since?
That night I remember Cindy and myself sweating big-time in the north concourse, waiting, forced inside away from the torrential rain and dangerous lightning, nearly passing out in the heat and humidity among a throng of Husker fans, then walking back to the vehicle after the announcement came that it was cancelled, getting soaking wet. It’s something I’ll never forget.
And every year there’s been something.
In 2019 there was the 96-yard touchdown pass given up at Colorado to propel the Buffs to 24 fourth quarter points to win in overtime. In 2020 the Huskers piled up 442 yards, 28 first downs but only 13 points in a loss at Northwestern, and later lost at home to Minnesota when the Gophers were without 33 players due to Covid.
This season there’s the unbelievable kicking game disaster at Oklahoma. The wrong way punt at Michigan State. Adrian’s fumble against Michigan. His four interceptions against Purdue.
Remember the excitement when Frost was hired? Remember him getting off the elevator, holding an introductory press conference, saying how Big Ten teams will have to adjust to his style of play?
These are the facts: In four seasons, Frost has never won three games in a row and has won two games in a row four times. Of his 15 wins, only 10 have come against Power five foes, and only two of those teams have had winning records. Frost is 0-12 versus ranked foes heading into Wisconsin. He’s just 6-15 against teams in the West Division, one of the weakest year-in and year-out in all of college football, and since Frost took over in 2018, just six other college teams have a worse record.
There are those locally and nationally who think Frost should have been fired, and maybe they are correct.
But maybe not.
Look how the Blackshirts are playing now versus during Mike Riley’s final season. Think how if we could change just five or six plays this season, how many more wins Big Red would have.
These next two games to finish off 2021 will be interesting. Will the team play with any intensity? Will they have the will to win?
What will be more interesting is who Scott will hire, or promote, to fill his four offensive coaching vacancies.
My solution? Put Ron Brown, already on staff, as the running backs coach, a position he’s already had in Lincoln.
Bring back Bo Pelini (did I really just type that?) as defensive coordinator, but don’t, I repeat don’t, under any circumstances, let him talk to the media.
Bring back Bill Callahan as O-line coach. He’s one of the best in the business.
And bring back Tom Osborne to coach up the quarterbacks. Even if it’s a part-time gig (remember his nap time), he’s more qualified than anyone else on the planet.
So there you go. Do that and we’re talking at least eight, nine maybe even 10 wins a year from now on.
And please, no more Frost warnings.
