Bennington topples Aurora in final
Seniors leave lasting impact on Big Red football program
Mack Owens took several moments to himself following the final whistle Monday night.
The Aurora senior co-captain fell just short of the ultimate goal for himself and the Huskies -- winning a state championship. Aurora was on the wrong end of a 42-14 loss to Bennington under Memorial Stadium’s bright lights.
A lot of things went through his mind. Even in the toughest of moments, that extra second to take a mental picture was everything for Owens.
No. 4 in red took a knee just after the final whistle to be alone with his thoughts. He looked to the sky with a long pause before the runner-up medal presentation.
After the team photo at the 50, Owens sat there for an extra breath, holding the runner-up trophy nearly as tight as his grip on the ball in the backfield.
There was a lot of reflection, thankfulness and appreciation from the returning all-state player, even in the toughest of situations -- describing his emotions to reporters.
