Phillips saves Aurora Post 42 in home opener

On more than one occasion, Chase Phillips clutched up for his teammates in the biggest spots.Phillips recorded the go-ahead RBIs while also saving the game on the mound, lifting the Aurora Pinnacle Bank Post 42 Seniors to an 8-7 win over Central City in its home opener May 24.

Football for a cause

Footballs were in the air Memorial Day weekend for a good cause. Nicole Broman and her family hosted a punt, pass and kick competition at the Aurora football field Saturday, raising money for cancer research in memory of Sydnee Owens, who lost her battle to Lymphoma at the age of 14.
Carsen Staehr won the long and triple jump events during last week’s Class B state track and field championships at Omaha Burke. Staehr won with a 23-00.25 in the long jump as well as a 47-09.75 in the triple.

In one event he wore the main target. In another, he was the attacker. In both instances, Carsen Staehr came out golden.

Morris, HPC Storm race to state medals at Burke

There were no storms at Omaha Burke last week, but the High Plains track team still made its presence felt inside the bowl. The Storm picked up three medal finishes, including one relay team, during the Class D portion of the NSAA state track and field championships Friday and Saturday.

Fahrnbruch, James earn state medals in the triple jump

Adi Fahrnbruch and Savanna James have jumped in one another’s shadows for most of the 2023 spring season. Those efforts culminated at Burke Stadium Thursday as each left with state medals in the triple jump.

Huskies claim district runner-up titles

Aurora’s boys could practically taste a district title as the sun faded past the Holdrege grandstand. However, that title slipped through its fingers in the final two relay races, slipping through like the heavy rainfall earlier in the day.

Storm relay teams shine at districts

A gutsy performance down the stretch from two High Plains relay teams at the D-2 district meet put an exclamation point on its state meet hopes.
Hampton’s Eli Arndt finished third in the 3200 run at last week’s D-2 district meet and became Hampton’s first state qualifier since 2019. Arndt finished behind HPC’s Haden Helgoth, who also qualified in the 3200.

Arndt soars into Omaha Burke

Eli Arndt ran a huge personal record time at last week’s May 10 D-2 district meet, but was still on the outside looking in. After sweating it out overnight, the Hampton junior officially got the good news the next day -- he was headed to Omaha Burke.

Aurora sails to new heights at conference

In one final tune-up before districts, the Husky track and field team looked strong in several areas. Both the boys and girls teams picked up fourth place finishes at the Central Conference meet in Schuyler May 2 with multiple event winners and new PRs, a big positive for coach Gordon Wilson.

Huskies finish third at conference

Drew Knust is playing his best golf of the season at the most important time. The Aurora senior posted two rounds in the 70s last week, including a fifth place effort of 76 at the Central Conference tournament at Lakeside Golf Club at Johnson Lake Friday.
