Aurora returns a veteran to the state championship floor while bringing along three newcomers ready for the show.The Lady Huskies qualified four wrestlers for next week’s state wrestling championships at the CHI Health Center in Omaha after a top five team effort at the B-1 district meet in Ord.

The High Plains girls wrestling team had a 100 percent success rate in qualifying its team for the state meet.The Gress sisters had nearly identical runs through the B-1 district meet in Ord, with matching third place efforts as both qualified for next week’s state wrestling championships in Omaha.

Anyone out there see that thrilling, edge-of-your seat game Sunday that provided yet another reason why sports are the best?I couldn’t turn it off. I was mesmerized by the tough defensive effort and yes, offput by some of the calls from the stripes.

The Aurora girls wrestling team began its postseason push Saturday, competing in the Central Conference tournament in Crete.The Lady Huskies didn’t have any overall winners, but sported three bronze medalists as well as six medalists overall.
Ryan Staehr was one of several heroes for the Huskies in back-to-back overtime wins last week against Kearney Catholic and Seward, hitting a game-tying shot against the Stars to force the extra session while coming up with a game-clinching steal against the Bluejays.

One thing is certain. Aurora’s boys basketball team is never out of it and that was proven twice on consecutive nights.The Huskies overcame deficits of four and seven in the final minute of games against Seward and Kearney Catholic, forcing overtime and eventually winning both.

The magic of the York City Auditorium didn’t favor the High Plains boys basketball team. The Storm found themselves in a barn burner Monday night as Osceola came from behind to force two overtimes and eventually win, 57-52 in the CRC quarterfinals.

Aurora’s wrestlers put on a solid showing Friday in David City.The Husky boys were just nipped at the end in the team battle as the host Scouts held off Aurora. David City scored 156.5 points ahead of Aurora’s 155, including two champions on the day.
