Harald N. Sorensen was born March 10, 1936, in a rural farmhouse some 2 miles outside of the small town of Ringsted, IA. He passed on in death on January 24, 2024.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Ann (Beyer) Sorensen, whom he married June 6, 1959, and his beloved family: son Jeffrey and wife, Deanna, son Michael, three grandchildren, Mark and Kyle Sorensen and Tiffany Weber and husband, Eric, one great-granddaughter Lilly Weber, one older sister, Ruth Connett, and sister-in-law, Joan Sorensen, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, August, and Thyra Sorensen, two older brothers, Leo and wife Alice, Arne Sorensen, and older sister, Cora Fagre and husband Roland.
His education started with graduating from Sunnyside, a one room rural country eighth grade school. He graduated from Ringsted High School, received an Associate’s Degree from Grand View College and a Bachelor’s Degree from Drake University, both in Des Moines, Iowa. He also graduated from Lutheran Seminaries in Des Moines, and Maywood, Illinois and became an Ordained Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. (Not to be in any way confused with the misnomer of so called “Evangelicals” of the political scene of America).
Based on teachings in life from his parents and his family he had the belief that one should be involved in helping one’s fellow human beings. He sought to accomplish that through his various occupations during his life.
First was Providing nutrition through spending the first 18 years of his life assisting in operation of the family farm which produced grain, beef, and pork.
Second was Providing spiritual guidance through serving as an Ordained Lutheran Pastor for some years serving congregations in Iowa and California.
Third was Providing health education through serving as the Assistant Director of Field Services for The National American Heart Association as well as Executive Director of the New Mexico Heart Association.
Fourth was Providing physical habitation facilities through real estate sales, appraisals and serving as Executive Vice President of the Albuquerque Board of REALTORS.
Favorite scripture: “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God - not because of works, lest any man should boast” Ephesians 2, 8-9.
Memorial services will be held at FRENCH-Wyoming on Tuesday, February 13 at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to The New Mexico Heart Association.
