A 15-year-old girl stands in the Hamilton Motor Inn, washing dishes. This was the unassuming start for Summer LaBenz and her lifelong relationship with baking pies.
“My boss got me into the cooking part of it and then he started teaching me the pies,” she recalled. “That’s kind of when I took interest in it and then from that point on I had made the pies there with him.”
Years later, LaBenz had moved on from the long since demolished Hamilton Motor Inn but was still baking. This led her to enter into the State Fair pie-baking contest, where she won.
