The Aurora City Council reviewed the city’s annual audit last week, with the auditor reporting a strong financial status due in large part to a higher-than-usual property valuation and below-average overall spending.
Michael Hoback with the AMGL auditing firm explained the audit findings in detail, then offered some perspective based on the company’s findings with 75 cities of similar size (3,000-10,000) across Nebraska.
“Your levy is below average,” he stated, citing Aurora’s 41.4 cents total levy per $100 valuation in 2020. The average property tax levy for communities of similar size was 42.4 cents. “You are doing a good job watching spending and a good job managing cash.”
