AHS starting up scholarship nights for seniors
Aurora High School’s counseling office staff is now holding weekly scholarship nights for seniors. Every Tuesday night through the end of February, the office will be open for any senior seeking assistance.
These nights are designed to allow busy students the chance to complete scholarship applications with the help of the high school’s counselors Jake Willems and Barb Bonifas, occasionally alongside other staff members.
As an office, counselors were ready to offer something new to the senior class. Working closely with students on the daily, Willems noted that scholarship applications take time and effort out of students’ already busy schedules, so there was a need for extra time for some students to focus on the work at hand.

Russ Peard: A steward of cattle, family
Faith, family and feeding cattle.
Living now in the house he grew up in, rural Phillips resident Russ Peard is dedicated to these three pillars in his life. He is being honored for the latter by the York-Hamilton County Cattlemen at the end of the month.
“Our family always had livestock. We were very diversified,” Peard began, telling the story of his start in the world of cattle. “We had the whole gamut. I had done chores before I ever went to school. I gathered eggs and would bring them to the house and helped my mom wash them."

Health fair draws a healthy crowd
Hundreds attended the first MCHI Live Healthy Health Fair and Craft and Vendor Show Saturday since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
MCHI coordinators of the event Tina Hunt and ReeAnn Regier both stated that they were pleased with the turnout and reaching out to Hamilton County residents about their health.
“We were really pleased with the turnout,” foundation director Regier said. “We thought, overall, it went really great. Our expectations were probably met, (but) we weren’t sure what to expect because we haven’t done it for three years.”

Huskies survive slow start to down Hastings
For a second game in a row, Aurora didn’t start off great offensively and fell behind early at home.
Thankfully for the Huskies, Carsen Staehr kickstarted the offense and the defense picked up the slack from there, defeating Hastings on the home court 54-43 Monday night.
The Hastings game was originally on the calendar for Jan. 10, but was postponed after a serious injury in the boys junior varsity game.

Allen gets 100th career win
Jack Allen hit a career milestone as the wrestling season starts to pick up with the second half of the year.
The senior Husky recorded his 100th career victory at Thursday’s Ord triangular while also finishing first at Saturday’s Schuyler Invite.
Allen, now 29-1 on the season, got his 100th career win against Ord’s Jed Boettcher. It wasn’t all great, however, as Allen also received his first loss of the year later that night, falling to St. Paul’s Quade Peterson.

Urkoski earns 100th win in 1st place Cross County effort
Wyatt Urkoski collected his 100th career victory on Saturday while running over the 160-pound division at the Cross County Invite.
Urkoski was one of four medalists for the Storm at Saturday’s wrestling meet, finishing 9th in the 20-team field.
The Storm junior has a 27-5 record thus far on the season, winning three of his four matchups Saturday via pinfall.
Urkoski’s first big win of the day came in the semifinals, defeating Central City’s Bryce Kunz with a 13-4 major decision.
