Gress makes history for High Plains
Storm senior first area girls wrestler to eclipse 100 career wins
Dakota Gress waited around nearly five hours before her first match Thursday, which became history.
The Storm senior became the first ANR area girls wrestler to eclipse 100 career victories during her home invitational, the Norm Manstedt girls tournament in Columbus with nearly 700 girls wrestlers and over 60 teams in attendance.
Gress was able to grind out an 8-0 major decision over Aurora's Mia Leininger to reach the milestone victory in front of a large contingent of Storm fans and family. She was able to keep going throughout the day, eventually finishing second in her 135-pound bracket to Yutan's Jordyn Campbell. Currently, Gress sports a 17-6 record on the season.
As for the Lady Huskies, Aurora featured two medalists in the challenging tournament with Sherly Gonzalez finishing second and Caly Settles taking fourth.
Gonzalez won each of her first three matches by pinfall to reach the finals at 120 before losing a tough one to Abbey Chipps of Summerland. Gonzalez currently has a record of 22-6.
As for Settles, the Aurora senior was able to reach the semifinal, but took a technicall fall loss before battling back to the third place match, where she lost to Baylee Chessmore of Neligh-Oakdale by fall. Settles currently has a record of 23-5 on the season.
Aurora had five quarterfinalists on the day with Gonzalez and Settles reaching the medalstand.
