Friday night roundup week 9
The High Plains defensive unit stood tall, handing the Storm its first playoff win in nearly a decade.
The Storm got a stop late to pick up a 22-20 win over Lawrence-Nelson Thursday night in Clarks during the opening round of the Class D2 playoffs.
A late HPC fumble with just over two minutes left gave the Raiders a chance for the game-winning score, but the Storm defense held firm to turn away Lawrence-Nelson and win the game.
For the Storm, its the first playoff win since 2015, excluding the state championship run by the OHP Stormdogs in 2019. High Plains advanced to the second round and will travel to Overton next Friday for a 6 p.m. kick.
As for Hampton and Aurora, the two teams closed out their respective regular seasons in opposite ways.
The Hawks were dominant in a 65-18 win at home over Santee. Jack Bullis scored two touchdowns in the opening quarter while also crossing the 1,000-yard rushing total for the third consecutive season.
With the win, Hampton moves its record to 5-3 on the season and expects to be in the 16-team D6 playoff bracket released Saturday morning. It will be the third consecutive playoff appearance for the Hawks.
Aurora was on the road in a rivalry game Friday night as the Huskies struggled to slow down former Husky Troy Huebert's Central City squad in a 53-28 defeat.
With the loss, the Huskies fall to 3-6 on the season and will miss the playoffs for the first time in 20 seasons.
Ian Jensen had a pair of touchdowns, one on the ground and another through the air, but the Huskies could not get enough stops against the Bison offense.
In his final game, Booker Scheierman had his best passing night of the year, completing 21 of 27 passes for 305 yards and two TDs.
Listed are all area teams and the scores of those games with the winning team in bold:
High Plains vs Lawrence-Nelson, 22-20
