Shirley Obermeier

Shirley Obermeier, 91, of Aurora, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at Memorial Community Care.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 25 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Grand Island. Pastor Bill Pavuk will officiate. Burial will be in the West Lawn Cemetery in Grand Island prior to the church service at 10 a.m.  Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, July 24 at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary, Aurora.  Memorials will be made to the family to be designated to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and 4-H Foundation. Shirley Lee Obermeier was born October 8, 1930, in Aurora at a home near the square that was a “hospital/maternity ward” type setting to Lee and Margaret (Talich) Millsap. Shirley had two siblings, Connie and Tom, however they were 13 and 16 years younger than her, so she was kind of like an only child.  Her family moved several times when she was young but always stayed in the Phillips, Giltner and Grand Island area.  Shirley graduated from Phillips High School with her 9 classmates.  After graduation, Shirley worked as a bookkeeper, as an aide at St. Francis in Labor and Delivery and a bookkeeper at a trucking company.
Shirley was united in marriage to Dale Obermeier on January 15, 1950, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.  They farmed in Hamilton County.  They had three children: Jolene, Mark and Sondra.  Shirley stayed at home to raise their family.  After the children were in high school, Shirley went to work at Bonnavilla for 20 years before retiring.  They were married for 66 years before Dale passed away in May of 2015.
Shirley was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran, where she was a greeter and took communion to shut-ins and the County Extensions Women’s Group.  Dale and Shirley loved to bowl, they were in several different leagues and dancing was another activity they tried to do every Saturday night.  Shirley was an avid seamstress her whole life, her children will tell you of the Easter outfits mom use to make and sewing quilts for Hamilton Manor residents.
For Shirley faith and family were the two biggest things that gave meaning to her life.   They enjoyed attending 4-H activities of children of the community including their children.  They were also involved in the activities of their children and grandchildren. They traveled great distances to support their endeavors.
Survivors of the immediate family include her one son and daughter-in-law, Mark (Pat) Obermeier of North Platte, and two daughters, Jolene (Wayne) Moomey of Taft, TN and Sondra (Bob) Herold of Omaha; five grandchildren, Kellie (Kendal) Dodge of North Platte, Kyle (Ally) Obermeier of Ames, Iowa, Haley (Damaso) Espino of Panama City, Panama, Kiley (Diego) Cordero of Panama City, Panama, and Riley (Jordan)  Herold of West Palm Beach, Florida; 9 great-grandchildren, Asher and Hazel Dodge of North Platte, McKinley, Duncan, Berkeley and Lincoln Obermeier of Ames, Iowa, Ximena and Analia Espino of Panama City, Panama and Sophia Cordero of Panama City, Panama.  She is also survived by one sister, Connie (Paul) Ludwig of Boelus and brother, Tom (Sue) Millsap of Lincoln.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Dale.
