Roger Merlin Happold was born on Sept. 10, 1940, in Grand Island,  the son of Merlin A. and Mildred (Torgerson) Happold of Doniphan.
Roger grew up on the family farm and attended grade school at District 47 in Hall County through 7th grade and then attended Giltner High School graduating in 1958. Roger attended UNL where he received an agronomy degree.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Shike on July 1, 1961. Together, they had three children: Douglas, Lori, and Lisa Happold. In 1962, he began farming with his father and later with his son until his retirement in 2004. He also sold seed corn for Pioneer Hi-Bred for 45 years. After his retirement, he worked at Lewis Greenscape and drove trucks for neighbors during harvest time.
Roger had a servant heart and served in many different capacities. He served on the Giltner School Board, the Giltner Alumni Association, and was a board member of Prairie Winds Assisted Living in Doniphan. In addition, he was a member of the Lion’s Club in Giltner. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church for many years, serving on the church council, as a greeter, an usher, and a communion deacon. Later, he became an active member of Grand Island Evangelical Free Church.
Roger was a faithful supporter of his children and grandchildren in their extracurricular activities. He enjoyed camping with his family at Bush Island and loved to take his kids and grandkids to Husker football games. He dearly loved his children and grandchildren. He always had time for a cuddle or a wrestling match with the little ones.
