As drought conditions continue to plague the Midwest, livestock producers across many states are looking for ways to reduce stress on their animals, and their operations.
As part of a webinar series through the Center for Agricultural Profitability at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, a group of experts gathered via Zoom to explore the topic of “preconditioning to prepare for weaning calves.”
Early weaning is just one of many decisions cow-calf livestock producers may be facing in light of dry conditions. The webinar covered topics including strategies, feeding practices, vaccines and more.
“When you think about preconditioning calves, we think about the management steps prior to, during and after weaning that ensure optimal health and performance of those calves once they leave the ranch,,” said Travis Mulliniks, associate professor in range cow production systems at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “There’s a lot of different management strategies around preconditioning and it’s not a one-size-fits-all program.”
Thinking more specifically about these preconditioning steps, Mulliniks noted, there are some focused on the before and after weaning timeframe.
