There were two bands, two sets of student sections and loud, oh was it loud.
It was everything desirable with a trip to state on the line between a pair of rivals. The streak verses the upset.
Aurora punched Grand Island Northwest in the mouth early, but the Vikings held true on its home floor, defeating the Lady Huskies in four sets, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-21 to win the B-6 district final Saturday.
Aurora coach Lois Hixson was blown away with Saturday’s atmosphere and was glad to be part of it all.
“We love that our band came and our cheerleaders were in full force,” Hixson commented. “Our fans and community turns out well when we need them and it comes time to get to state.”
GINW’s streak of state tournament appearances extended to 21 in a row with the win while Aurora was denied a second consecutive trip to Lincoln.
“They had all the pressure on them because they’ve talked about the streak all week,” Hixson said. “We knew if we could crack that just a little bit, the door would open.”
