The Aurora City Council approved a request last week for a $435,000 Community Development Block Grant with a $100,000 match by participating business owners to help fund a downtown revitalization project .
Lori Ferguson, a community consultant with South Central Economic Development District (SCEDD) was one of three who spoke in favor of the application during a public hearing Aug. 23, explaining what the money can be used for.
“Once we get the match requirement (25 percent of the business owner’s project total), it’s not for just cosmetic appearances,” she explained. “There must be reconstruction, renovation and repair.”
The public hearing and council approval was the latest step for SCEDD and JEO Consulting Group after getting approval for a downtown survey to gauge the needs of the area and interest in the project.
