Headlining the Hamilton County Corn Grower’s Association annual plot tour, after a tour of the physical plot, was a presentation by Aurora native Michael Moritz. Moritz currently serves as a Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Hastings.
Like many fields in Hamilton County, this one, located just of Highway 14 north of Aurora, still had standing water in the corners thanks to rain. With up to 4.9 inches falling over the last week, the effect could be beneficial for farmers.

Increased rainfall brings potential bigger profits

Areas in Hamilton County have received anywhere from 3.1 to 4.9 inches of rain from April 23 to May 6, according to the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources website, bringing moisture to farms that have been parched since the start of a dry spell in December of last year.

It’s no secret, the weather in Hamilton County and much of the state of Nebraska in general has been abnormally dry.  So dry, in fact, that local fire departments are issuing no-burn orders until a decent amount of moisture has returned to the soil.

New guidelines shared for emergency siren use

In combination with a change put in place by the National Weather Service, the sirens in towns across Hamilton County will now be sounding for more than tornado warnings. “We’ve had some policies, or guidelines, throughout the years,” Hamilton County Emergency Manager Kirt Smith explained.

Bitter temperatures blanket Hamilton County, country

Extreme low temperatures have settled into the air across the state as a whole, including Hamilton County, where Monday’s low was reportedly around negative 26 in the early morning hours.
