Garrett sets new course record, 64

Cash Garrett had a day to remember on the golf course Sunday as he posted a round of 6-under par 64 to win the annual Poco Creek Club Championship while also setting a course record.
Garrett, who qualified for state as a sophomore on the Aurora golf team in May and competed in the Nebraska Junior Golf Championships last week at Quarry Oaks, came out on fire Sunday, posting two eagles in his first four holes. He started the day on the par-5 fifth hole, getting on in two and sinking the putt, then drove it pin-high on No. 8 and chipped in for his second eagle of the day. Garrett, who lists a 3 handicap, also carded four birdies along with two bogeys to finish with matching nine-hole rounds of 32.
Asked to describe his day, Garrett admitted that he almost didn’t play on Sunday.
“I had some high back pains when I woke up and really didn’t want to hurt my back with football starting Monday,” said Garrett, who will play tight end and linebacker for the Huskies this fall. “I just decided to swing easy and play my game.”
That strategy worked out well.
“I got some new wedges and they’ve been working for me, so recently I’ve been playing pretty well,” he said. “My best score out there at Poco was a 32, and I only shot that once. It’s really difficult to do that two times in a row.”
Garrett’s foursome Sunday included his father, Chad, and Husky golf teammates Landon Danhauer and Carter Howland.
“I told my dad on No. 18 (which was hole No. 4 since he started on 5) that I just needed to par the hole and I would have the record by two, and I knew that I probably shouldn’t have said that,” he said with a laugh. “I drove it into the rough left and had about 120 yards in. I hit my 56 (degree wedge) to about an inch, so almost jarred the last hole. It really hasn’t sunk in, but I think that’s probably some of the best golf I’ve ever played.”
The previous 18-hole course record is believed to have been 66, which was posted by Mitch Oswald.
Sunday’s field in the club championship included 31 players, who competed in both gross and net score competitions. The top 10 (and ties) in the gross field included Garrett with his record-setting 64, followed by Justin Kosmicki at 71; Carter Howland, 80; Landon Danhauer, 80; Jeff Kingsley, 81; Curran Vetter, 84; Kyler Kosmicki, 89; Rick Berstler, 89; Troy Knust, 89. Chad Garrett, Cy Carlson, Bruce Hall and Brandon Kliewer all tied for 10th at 90.
In the net score division, Don Ramsey finished first with a net 59, followed by Cash Garrett, 64; Landon Danhauer, 66; Rick Bertstler, 67; Justin Kosmicki, 69; Joel Schaffert, 69; Kyler Kosmicki, 69; Darren Holzinger, 69; Lucas Hieb, 70. Jeff Kingsley and Troy Knust tied for 10th at net 71.
