Harriet Barron
Harriet Barron, age 86, of Aurora, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 27 at the Aurora United Methodist Church, 1104 A Street, Aurora. Rev. Michelle Reed will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26 at the church. Memorials may be made in care of the family to designate at a later date. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. Harriet Joyce Barron, the daughter of Willis and Camilla (Lewis) George was born in Aurora, on February 5, 1940 and passed away in Aurora, on May 21, 2026, at the age of 86.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church. She graduated from Aurora High School in 1959 and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Education - Home Economics.
It was in Lincoln that she met her husband, Joseph “Mike” Michael Barron, Jr. They were married on February 15, 1964. Their first daughter, Brenda was born in Lincoln. Mike was serving in the U.S. Air Force and received duty orders for Puerto Rico, during this time Harriet lived in Puerto Rico, where their second daughter, Barbra, was born. Mike’s next orders moved the family to Washington, D.C. where their third daughter, Bertina, was born at Andrews A.F.B. When Mike took orders for Guam , Harriet and the girls lived at McConnell A.F.B. in Wichita, Kansas. Mike received orders for Thailand next, so Harriet and the girls moved back to Aurora, to be closer to family and that is where the girls started school. Harriet was a stay-at-home mom. Over the years she also worked at the G.I. Independent, Lieter Fabrics and then running May-Bar Window Fashions with her sister for 27 years. Mike passed away on September 13, 2023.
Harriet was very involved in the Methodist Church. She had served on the finance committee, parish relations committee, Rachel’s Circle, was a point person for the original sanctuary cross and the other times it needed attention or was replaced, the last time being just last year. Harriet volunteered and was involved in 4-H, where she was a State Fair judge for many years. Harriet was awarded the 4-H Life Time Achievement Award. Harriet was also a long-time volunteer at the Memorial Hospital Thrift Store.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Camilla George, husband, Mike Barron and son, Douglas Barron; sister, Evelyn May and sister-in-law, Joanne George.
Those who remain to cherish her memory are three daughters, Brenda (Bob) Chop of Ravenna, Barbra (Scott) Mikkelsen of Aurora and Bertina (Jeff) Carlson of Overton; siblings, Gene (Shari) George and Bethel George; 7 grandchildren, Alexandra (Michael) Meduna of Overton, Ashley Carlson of Kearney, Dalton Carlson of Overton, Austin (Kathlyn) Mikkelsen, Carson Mikkelsen of Wichita, KS, Mikayla (Chris) Roth of Ravenna and Kyle Chop of Kearney; a great-granddaughter, Eleanore Mikkelsen, great-grandson, Myles Meduna and another great-grandchild on the way. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, John May of Aurora; sister-in-law, Kaye (Charlie) Villines of Kentucky as well as many other family members and friends.
