Emotional challenges brought on by a year-long struggle with the COVID pandemic prompted Aurora Public Schools to add a mental wellness component to its Career Day schedule Feb. 17, which administrators say will likely become a permanent addition to the program.
Emily Hoegh, a licensed mental health practitioner with ESU 9 serving Aurora and Hampton public schools, helped coordinate a program featuring keynote speaker Jen McNally and four break-out sessions, all focused on various aspects of mental health. The need was apparent, according to AHS Principal Doug Kittle, and the reaction positive.
“As students entered the building at the start of the school year we were noticing more of our students battling some anxiety and depression issues, more than typical,” Kittle noted. “We knew we had an issue that we needed to get addressed.”
