High Plains Community Schools will see a raise in substitute pay for the 2022-23 school year, based on the school board’s vote during its regular meeting. 
A year ago, HPC paid substitutes $60 for a half day and $120 for the full day. Across the board at other schools, shortages have caused those rates to increase and HPC was no stranger to the substitute shortage last year. 
Both Supt. Kim Beran and Elementary Principal Bre Helgoth shared with the board that finding substitutes became extremely difficult last year, especially during the winter and spring months with illnesses and track season. 
Often, HPC was taking other administrators and even teachers in their planning period to help cover classes throughout the day, something that concerned the school board.
