Detasseling season tops off despite weather worries

Local youth from a range of ages have officially begun what many consider a summertime rite of passage in rural Nebraska -- detasseling season. As a reminder, detasseling is the process of removing the pollen-producing flowers, or “the tassel,” from the tops of corn plants.

The 2021 detasseling season is well underway, with another year of early mornings, heat and towering corn to overcome. Like every other season, this one comes with its fair share of challenges.

A changing of the guard was announced this week at Outfield Detasseling, LLC, with founder/owner Steve Koepke selling the business to long-time detasseling managers and partners Jeremy Dubas and Darin Garfield.
