Aurora native motivated to run through wife’s cancer journey

Running has always been an outlet for Chad Oswald.
“I’ve been a long-time runner,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed it. It’s been more recreational, but it’s my preferred mode of exercise.”
The Aurora resident can easily be spotted out on and around the streets and sidewalks of town, more recently in final training mode for one of the country’s most prolific races -- the Boston Marathon.
Oswald recently competed in the 2022 Boston event back in April, finishing the race with a time of 3:49:09.
For much of his life, though, running wasn’t about competitions or marathons. It was just a fun form of exercise. That is, until there became a much bigger purpose behind lacing up his running shoes.
Five years ago, Oswald’s wife Joni was diagnosed with lung cancer and immediately began treatment.
While doing that, the Oswalds came upon a research foundation called Lungevity, which was looking for some help with fund-raising for research and support.
Part of that effort, Oswald noted, involved participation in the Chicago Marathon as a charity sponsor.
“It was a neat opportunity for Joni’s cancer journey and my interest in running to come together and cooperate in raising some money for their research,” he said.
