Jeffs sweep Bearcats on opening night
The H&H Bearcats began a new era of basketball Thursday night, as Hampton and Heartland joined forces for its first winter contest.
The Bearcats hosted Southern Nebraska Conference foe Fairbury and it was the Jeffs who left Henderson with a pair of wins, the girls taking a 51-40 victory while the H&H boys fell 54-44.
In the girls game, H&H used a 22-point second quarter to take a halftime lead, but trailed 35-31 entering the fourth quarter. The Bearcats were again within four with four minutes left after a Mia Hiebner three, but couldn't get within one possession the rest of the way.
Hiebner led the Bearcats with 15 points on the night while Madalyn Janzen added 10.
On the boys side, the Jeffs were hot early, making three triples in the opening quarter before opening up leads of 17-9 after one and 30-23 at the half.
H&H pulled within four at the 6:24 mark of the fourth quarter after a Trent Goertzen hoop and foul, but again couldn't get within a single possession.
The Bearcat offense was paced by Jagger Regier with 12 while Rigs Newton added nine.
H&H will be back in action Friday night on the road at Wilber-Clatonia beginning at 6 p.m.
