Huskies soar past Stars
Chilly outside temperatures didn't stop Aurora's two offenses Thursday night at Kearney Catholic.
The Aurora girls used a balanced offensive attack to get back in the win column with a 52-35 win while the boys buried 12 three-pointers in a convincing 68-30 victory over the Stars.
In the girls game, it was a Kaitlyn Staehr and Hailey Hoff combo effort early on with 17 combined points for a 24-14 halftime lead. From there, Evelyn Kraus added 12 of her 14 points in the second half as Aurora moves to 9-5 on the season.
If you were late to the boys tipoff, the show got going early as the Huskies made six of its 12 three-pointers in the opening quarter alone, racing out to a 31-8 lead. Ryan Staehr, Jaxson Slagle, Canon Allen, Landon Danhauer and Sam Jones all made triples in the opening eight minutes.
By halftime, Allen and Staehr had combined for 26 first half points to take a 51-20 lead at the break and eventually extended its win streak to seven.
After a scheduled game with Seward Friday night, the Huskies are set for the Central Conference tournament with high expectations starting next week.
The girls team earned the No. 1 seed and plays the winner of Lexington-Schuyler Tuesday night. The winner there plays the winner of Adams-Central Crete Friday in York before the championship final at Adams Central Saturday at 5 p.m. Aurora has not won the Central Conference tournament since 2016 and only twice since 1982.
As for the boys, the Huskies are the defending champs and hold the No. 2 seed, playing Seward Tuesday night. The winner plays the winner of Crete-York Thursday in York before the championship final in Adams Central Saturday at 3 p.m.
