Huskies finish fourth at conference tourney

Body

The Aurora softball team nearly pulled a wild upset Thursday in the Central Conference tournament semifinals, leading eventual champion Grand Island Northwest until the final moments as the Vikings scored nine unanswered for a 9-7 victory. The Huskies would end up finishing fourth in the tournament with a 6-2 win over York and 12-2 loss to Seward.

Against the Vikings, Aurora plated the first seven runs of the contest, including RBI hits from Ashlyn Kottwitz, Adrianna Brei and Novella Stevens to lead 4-0.

That lead became 7-0 after three when Kierra Siebrass collected a RBI bunt single while Emely Gonzalez hit a sac fly and a third run scored on a passed ball.

Despite the 90-minute clock dwindling, Northwest rallied with three runs apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take the lead, 9-7. Aurora was unable to answer, going down in order during the bottom of the sixth.

Aurora's seven runs against the Vikings were the only allowed by Northwest during the entire tournament as the champs outscored its three opponents, 37-7.

During Thursday's three games, Siebrass led the Huskies with four hits while Vivi Fahrnbruch, Violet Carstensen, Londyn Teahon and Kottwitz all had three.

With just two regular season games remaining, the Huskies sport a 12-12 record.
