HPC’s march toward a potential first-ever trip to the state volleyball tournament started off nearly perfect Monday night.
The Lady Storm made quick work of Giltner, defeating the Hornets in three sets 25-19, 25-9 and 25-20 at home to start the D2-3 subdistrict tournament.
Giltner took the early lead in the first with a couple Haylee Scott kills, but HPC jumped out front after a block from Rylee Ackerson, an ace by Gordona Howell and a kill from Kenzie Wruble.
HPC pushed its lead to 7-2 before Giltner used a timeout. The break helped the Hornets calm down and go on a 6-0 run to take the lead, 8-7 on a Scott ace.
High Plains quickly jumped back out front with a Courtney Carlstrom kill. Two more attacks from Carlstrom as well as Hailey Lindburg and HPC pulled ahead 15-9.
HPC’s lead became 18-11 at one point before Giltner cut that to four, 18-14. Lindburg hit a kill and ace before Wruble adding a second to put HPC on top, 21-15.
Giltner wouldn’t go away as Tracy Wiles added a rare attack before the Hornets cut the lead to three, 22-19 as the Storm used a timeout.
A Wruble ace finished the set strong as HPC took the first, 25-19.
