Over the past few years, while still enjoying what she was doing, legendary Hampton coach Diane Torson was putting together an exit strategy.
The three-time state championship winning coach wanted to not only leave the program better than when she found it, but leave it in the best of hands.
Torson was able to do both.
After nearly four decades, Hampton will have a changing of the guard at the top of its program with a former player stepping into Torson’s legendary shoes.
Kayla Gaughen, a 2006 Hawk graduate, is taking over the Hampton volleyball program from Torson with Margo LaBrie continuing as an assistant coach.
Torson and Gaughen are swapping spots, essentially, with Gaughen now in charge of the high school team and Torson now leading the junior high squad.
For Gaughen, knowing that both Torson and LaBrie wanted to leave the Hawk program in her hands was a special feeling.
