Efforts to spark new housing developments in Aurora paid off in July with building permits for five new single-family dwellings issued at City Hall, boosting the month’s total to more than $1.7 million.
That one-month surge doubled the number of single-family housing permits for the year to 10, with local housing officials predicting several more starts before the end of the year. As for the July activity, two new homes will soon be built in the Northridge Subdivision, with three spec homes slated for construction in the Streeter Subdivision on Highlander Lane.
The July building permit total of $1.7 million is well above average for this time of year, according to ANR reports. Last year’s July report listed the total at $496,869 and looking back over the last decade the total was $126,509 in 2022; $122,925 in 2021; $356,685 in 2020; $2,362,575 in 2019 (sparked by Heartland Bank’s $2 million facility on Highway 34); $1,161,942 in 2018 (boosted by a $500,000 Aurora Cooperative fertilizer tank project and two single-family dwellings); $1,316,184 in 2017 (boosted by the City of Aurora’s $889,000 solar array and $393,000 tennis court projects); $297,527 in 2016; $1,717,792 in 2015 (with the lion’s share of that attributed to an addition at the Hamilton County Law Enforcement Center; and $810,985 in 2014.
Through the first seven months of the year, the running tally now stands at $10.9 million, compared to $5.1 million last year and $3.5 million in 2022.
The new year got off to a fast start with $2.35 million worth of building permits issued at City Hall through February, and the March total tripled that by adding another $5.6 million to the running tally. The biggest permit of the year thus far was issued in March to KAAPA Partners Aurora, LLC, which is building a new administrative office building on Harvest Drive valued at $3.7 million.
