Work on 1st Street project not expected to begin until fall

The Aurora City Council officially annexed the Streeter’s Sixth Addition into the city limits last week, further expanding the housing subdivision located west of 1st Street.
Council members approved the third and final reading during a brief meeting July 9.
It was also announced later that construction work on the new sanitary sewer in the Streeter Subdivision is currently in progress, which will be followed by construction of the water main and storm sewer. Paving is expected to be completed on that project by mid-November.
In regard to the 1st Street construction project, which was previously expected to start in mid-July, that project has been pushed back, according to Utility Supt. Adam Darbro. Construction/relocation of the water main along 1st Street is now projected to be completed in the fall or winter of 2024, with minor disruption to traffic along that busy corridor.
Darbro reported that the contractor for the project does not anticipate any construction to begin prior to the start of school in August. With the revised start date, final completion of the project is now expected by Sept. 15, 2025.
In other business during the July 9 meeting, the council:
* approved a $2,500 request from First Light Child Advocacy Center for financial support during the 2024-25 fiscal year. That is the same amount requested last year, according to Leah Smillie, executive director;
* approved reimbursement for facade improvements at Mulligan Man, with $6,180 to be covered by a CDBG grant and $2,461 by the owner.
