Hiring candidates to fill local teaching positions has become more challenging due to a statewide teacher shortage, though Hampton Supt. Holly Herzberg reports that there are currently no openings at Hampton Public Schools.
Herzberge confirmed that there are fewer candidates applying for teaching jobs now as compared to previous years. HPS employs 24 teachers and four paras, with only one position opening this coming year. She said she expects the board to approve her recommendation to fill that spot at the March board meeting, though adding that the issue of a statewide teacher shortage is a genuine concern.
“The number of applicants for an opening has decreased a great deal in the last few years due to the teacher shortage,” she began. “In my opinion, we will continue to see this trend of a decrease in applicants for openings.”
