Organizers with Heroes and Huskies raised about $500 from 30 attendees Sunday. There former U.S. Navy pilot Lt. Brett Mitchell hosted a Q&A about his career and the accuracy of the blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” which returned to 12th Street Cinema last weekend.
Mitchell spent the weekend on smaller Q&A’s after showings of the movie to promote the event. Wearing his full uniform throughout the weekend appearances, with his call sign “Pete” on his name patch a direct homage to Tom Cruise’s character, Mitchell began with the movie’s impact on his decision to join the Navy’s aviation program.
“When I was a kid, I loved the first movie, ‘Top Gun,’” he remembered. “I don’t know what age my parents let me watch it, probably too young. But between that movie which I can recite verbatim, and going to air shows with my dad’s mother...there was just something like deep inside me that says ‘Hey, you know, this would be my ideal job to have.’ So I think I just had to put that in the box deep in my brain and didn’t think about it for a while.”
