High Plains hangs on for road victory in season opener

A game on the verge of a blowout quickly turned into one of the most tense and exciting of the weekend.
High Plains led Giltner by 16 in the second half on the road Friday night before the Hornets charged back into it before missing a last-second shot in a 40-37 win by the Storm in boys competition to open the winter season.
The win marks the first as head coach for HPC’s JT Hamm, who was happy to see his guys come through in a tight situation.
“We’re a pretty athletic team and we do a lot of things the right way,” Hamm said. “Getting out in transition is something we have to build on. If we can use our speed as a strength, that’s what we’re going to do.”
As for Giltner coach Scott Dangler, while disappointed in the loss, the coach was pleased with the fight in his team to rally back from a deficit.
“It was fun to watch,” Dangler said of his team’s comeback. “We sensed them getting nervous on the ball and our guys pounced. We didn’t change a whole lot, we just executed very well. We’re growing very quickly.”
