Hampton approves recent blight study
Consultant says it is first key step in redevelopment
Hampton village leaders accepted a study Monday night which concluded that the village is blighted and substandard according to state law, results that could be the first step in a long-term redevelopment effort to build more houses in the community.
Bobbi Pettit, owner of Five Rule Rural Planning, presented a 22-page document which summarized the results of the study, noting that the name of the study itself is somewhat misleading.
“All the criteria that we had to meet is dictated by the Nebraska community redevelopment law,” she explained during the first of two public hearings at Monday’s village board meeting. “I think blighted and substandard is an unfortunate term. I prefer to say underdeveloped, which is what Hampton is. You would not look at Hampton and think blighted or substandard, but when you read through the criteria it is definitely underdeveloped.”
