Tri-Community Foundation hosts annual banquet
he community support was on full display Saturday night with the big picture in mind. 
The Tri-Community Foundation held its annual banquet and fundraiser Saturday evening in Polk as the communities of Polk, Hordville and Clarks pulled together in an effort to raise money for the future.

 

Heartland United Way hits $1.5M goal
The Heartland United Way celebrated its 75th year with a banquet and awards ceremony Thursday, officially ending a fundraising campaign which raised $1,539,142 to benefit nonprofit agencies serving Hamilton, Hall, Merrick and Howard counties.
Working in the midst of a global pandemic created new challenges for United Way staff and volunteers, noted HUW President Karen Rathke, while also heightening the need for financial assistance throughout the four-county area.

 

Inclusion finds home in Aurora
World Down Syndrome Day was just a little bit more special this year for one Aurora family, and hopefully many to come, thanks to something seemingly simple -- a bookshelf.
Despite being small, about the size of its namesake, this three-shelf wooden furniture piece was welcomed readily to Coaster’s Coffee on March 21 and holds big significance. The bookshelf, part of a program called Brooks’s Bookshelf, will now house reading material that strives to promote diversity, uniqueness and inclusion.

 

Pair of exchange students make strong bonds in Giltner
As the snow pours out across Giltner Public School grounds, two 11th grade foreign exchange students  more familiar to Mediterranean climates and big cities recalled their six months spent together in a Nebraskan town.
“I live in a city with 3 million people,” said Francesca Di Mare of Naples, Italy. “So it’s very, very busy.” 
Di Mare explained that in her time in Naples she would walk, take a bus or ride a train to places that were close by. She focused her after-school activities as an alpine skier.

 

Staehr sets new school record at home
With everything happening so quickly at Aurora’s home invitational Friday, Carsen Staehr’s efforts sort of flew under the radar. 
That is, until now. 
The Aurora junior set a new school record in the triple jump with a mark of 45-01.25 while also setting a new personal record in the long jump at 21-04.25.
