Corn field catches fire near Marquette
A call went out on Tuesday around 2 p.m. for a ditch fire on 22 Road just west of Marquette.
Marquette fire chief D.J. Frauendorfer reported that cause of the fire was most likely a cigarette thrown out of a window. He continued, noting that the critical fire weather caused the blaze to spread throughout the harvested field.
Willis reflects on family ties dating to Civil War
Many share the view that veterans need to be remembered, living or lost, and it is not uncommon that a family’s military history go back for generations.
This is the case for the late Robert (Bob) Willis, whose wife Genene has chosen to uncover precious memories and artifacts dating back to the Civil War, all to tell their story and pay tribute to one of Hamilton County’s original pioneers -- Bob’s great-grandfather.
“His name was Hamilton Jefferson Willis,” Genene said. “(And) he was born in 1842. One thing that’s unusual about him is how long he lived. He died February 1st, 1935.”
Voter turnout tops 82 percent in Hamilton County
Hamilton County showed up in force for last week’s General Election, with more than 80 percent of registered voters weighing in.
Unofficial election results from Hamilton County as of noon on Nov. 4, indicated that 5,607 ballots were cast in this year’s election. Out of 6,813 registered voters in Hamilton County, this produced an impressive 82.3 percent voter turnout rate for the county. Out of the 5,607 total votes, 3,727 of those were cast on Election Day and 1,880 were cast as early-voters.
Aurora’s upset effort falls short at state
An early start time didn’t slow Aurora’s first state tournament appearance in four seasons.
The Lady Huskies played inspired volleyball as the underdog, but were unable to pull off the upset, falling to Norris in straight sets, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-20 Nov. 4 at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
HPC considering Beran for superintendent
High Plains Supt. Brian Tonniges approached the school board Monday about the superintendent vacancy that will be left when he retires and voiced that the board had some decisions to make on the route they would take to find a new candidate.
“You do have another person that is currently on staff that is qualified to fill that position,” he noted. “If the board so desires you don’t have to go with a search firm. You can offer it to any candidate that you deem can fill the position.”
