Serving up a farm-to-school taste test in Aurora
Aurora elementary students had a special treat on the menu last week, a taco salad featuring ingredients mostly grown on a nearby farm.
That entree was served up thanks to the friendship of Denise Bone and Brittany Lozdoski, who share a passion for preparing and eating locally grown produce. Bone, who serves as the school’s nutrition director, heard about Lozdoski’s new Epic salad business in Central City and invited her to serve up some of her unique products to the kids.
“I met Brittany at the winery in Central City, then I saw the salads that she was selling to staff and the idea just popped into my head to see if she would be interested in doing some farm-to-school taste testing,” Bone explained. “With COVID and staffing the last few years we haven’t had many opportunities to bring in local foods.”

Guests enjoy spooktacular Saturday at Edgerton
Seeing somewhere around 150 ghouls, goblins, monkeys and everything in between, the Edgerton Spooktacular was a hit Saturday in Aurora.
The beautiful weather, combined with a wealth of activities and educational demonstrations, kept guests entertained throughout the event.
“Oh! It’s so much fun, he’s having a blast,” Jan Ediger said, speaking on behalf of her small grandson, Henry Ediger. “He could hardly wait to get here, like he kept asking, ‘Are we going to Edgerton Center now?’ But yeah, we’ve been all the way through inside and we’ve been downstairs. We made slime. He’s just having a blast and stuff like this is just so good for that.”
Edgerton Center Executive Director Mary Molliconi also noted just how much “spooky” good fun guests were having.

Huskies suffocate Lex in playoff opener
Aurora’s defense has been nearly impossible to crack. Lexington found that out the hard way Friday night.
The Huskies won the turnover battle, blocked multiple punts and shut down Lexington’s offense, rolling to a 49-7 win in the first round of the Class B playoffs.
Aurora’s defensive effort was its best of the season statistically, holding Lexington to 55 total yards of offense, including just six passing yards.
Aurora coach Kyle Peterson explained after the game that the goal was to start the playoffs with great defensive play.
“We wanted to get a lot of possessions in the first half and force a turnover or two,” Peterson said. “We got a special teams score. A lot of things went well for us.”

Trunk or Treat a hit in Hampton
The Hampton Community Club called an audible Sunday, moving the annual Trunk or Treat Halloween event inside at the fire barn rather than coping with potentially inclement weather.
The end result was a festive atmosphere which filled the fire barn from 4-6 p.m. with kids in costumes as well as numerous members of the school and community.
“We actually decided around noon today,” noted Teresa Dose, a member of the Hampton Community Club. “With the weather being a little bit chilly, we just decided to bring it inside.”
In addition to a new venue, rather than inviting participants to stop by various businesses on Main Street, this year’s Trunk or Treat featured some new activities as well.

Lady Storm falls one game shy of state in record year
The High Plains Lady Storm stood on the verge of history Saturday, competing in the D2-4 district volleyball final at Tilden with a chance to become the first-ever girls team in school history to qualify for the state tournament.
It was not to be, however, as High Plains fell to Stuart in a hard-fought four-set match, 9-15, 15-25, 25-20, 18-25.
“I feel like the program is headed in the right direction,” said coach Brittany Klingsporn, who led her team to a district final in each of the past two seasons. “It’s hard for the seniors this year, but we’ve got a long of young girls on the team and a lot of young girls coming up so hopefully it keeps the momentum of the program going.”
