The Aurora speech team hosted its own invite Saturday, Feb. 8 with 37 schools competing in a competition that featured 600 entries throughout the day. Aurora speech coach Keli Margritz reported that the contest featured two preliminary rounds for all students, with top performers advancing to Champs and Honors finals. Fifteen students medaled in each of the varsity events, while 10 medaled in the novice events.
 

Popular Nashville songwriter and recording artist Aaron Tippin will perform at this year’s Hamilton County Fair on July 25. The Hamilton County Ag Society made the announcement this past weekend at the Home and Garden show, saying that Tippin’s Friday evening concert at the grandstand is being sponsored Hamilton Telecommunications. The concert is being billed as a “family fiesta” and will begin at 7 p.m.

Sunday was the youngsters’ turn to shine as Aurora hosted its annual youth club tournament with kiddos from PreK through eighth grade competing for glory. After interviewing four candidates for the position of superintendent during a special meeting Monday night, the Giltner School Board plans to issue a superintendent contract at its regular school board meeting Wednesday night. The candidate selected will succeed the outgoing Supt. Nick Mumm at the end of the current school year. The candidates interviewed on Monday included Gregg Cruickshank, Matt Gordon, Chris Lecher and Curtis Cogswell, who is leaving the position at Dorchester Mumm will be taking over next school year.

Motorists passing by Aurora on Highway 14 and/or Interstate 80 now have easy access to a popular local eatery as Pueblo Viejo has expanded its operations with a food truck near the intersection of the heavily travelled highways. Owner Antonio Sanchez, who opened the Pueblo Viejo namesake restaurant on Highway 34 in 2017, said the food truck venture is something he’s been thinking about for a while now. More than 300 diners were served Danish aebleskivers last Sunday, Feb. 9 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Kronborg east of Marquette. Organizers say it takes most of the church members working days in advance to carry out the annual fundraiser.
