May is recognized as National Drug Court Month and District Judge Rachel Daugherty of the fifth judicial district has been working to bring the benefit of the program to those in Hamilton and Merrick counties.
As it is called in this district, the Problem Solving Court was created to help people overcome a specific problem.
“We use it as a drug court for drug addiction in the state of Nebraska,” she explained. “We’re looking at expanding in some areas to mental health and DUI court.”
The goal is to reduce the expense of incarcerating somebody, which she voiced can be around $44,000 a year. They also work to help the participants overcome addiction without getting into trouble again.
She noted that they want people to have the ability to be good citizens and to give them the tools needed to be successful.
