GOP candidate for governor sees ag as growth opportunity

Body

Republican candidate for governor Jim Pillen made a campaign stop in Aurora last week sharing an optimistic outlook for Nebraska while also explaining what he believes is a critical need to elect someone who fully understands agriculture.
A native of Platte County who grew up on a small pig farm and now owns a large Columbus-based pig operation bearing his name, Pillen told a small group at the Bremer Center Nov. 15 that this campaign is rooted in four words -- kids, taxes, agriculture and values.
“I’m a Christian, conservative Republican,” he began. “I’m about faith, family, pro-life. Life starts at conception by the gift of God. That’s how my world works. I’m a believer, obviously, in the Second Amendment and that property rights are extraordinarily important.”
Having gained some statewide recognition as a member of the Nebraska Board of Regents, Pillen said he’s been accused of being a liberal at heart, to which he responded that if people believe that they haven’t been paying attention.
