Aurora High School senior Jeremy Hunter was named the 2021 Dest. 6 American Legion Oratorical Contest winner after an impressive performance Nov. 5.
With a speech titled “A Threat to the Constitution,” Hunter noted his piece’s goal was to discuss the “weaponization of the articles and amendments of the Constitution” and why this might be a problem.
“I explain(ed) that today it is now acceptable and almost normal for political leaders to weaponize parts of the Constitution and use them not for their intended use, but as a way to get ahead politically,” he said. “We’ve seen this most recently in the impeachments of President Trump, where 2018 midterm democratic candidates literally campaigned on a platform of weaponizing their constitutional ability to impeach the president, even though at the time they never had anything specific to impeach him with.”
