Fire destroys camper at park entrance

Body

Aurora firefighters responded to a call that came in at 11:04 a.m. Thursday. They arrived at the east entrance to Streeter Park along Highway 14 to find a camper fully engulfed in flames. Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Schneider reported that the driver of the vehicle pulling the camper was near the corner by McDonald’s and was flagged down by a person who told them smoke was coming out from the camper. The driver turned into the Streeter Park approach and was able to safely unhook from the camper and move away from the fire. Schneider said the firefighting effort was complicated by two completely fueled ATVs in the camper that kept reigniting as they fought to put out the blaze. Fire crews were on scene for an hour before the fire was completely extinguished. The cause of the fire is unknown.
